Fascinating small mirrors

Back in December 1986, at a less frequented beach at the northern shores of Lanzarote I watched a group of para gliders cruising through the cloudless deep blue sky and landing in the sand. A steady wind blew from the direction of the sea, being disrupted by treacherous, volatile gusts of winds which caused problems for some of the gliders.

Tumbling to the ground more forcefully than expected, one of them stumbled and was thrown around in the sand when the wind caught his the glider. It was obvious that someone was going to get hurt badly soon. Holding their breath, some people on the beach were clearly united by the question: "Will he make it, will he make it …?"

How about having slim, tower-high mirrors looming from the surf? In those, the rather stupid thought emerged in my mind, the guys could see their landing and make corrections if necessary.

Well, there was nothing wrong about the aesthetics of this imagination. I made a sketch of it and back in Germany completed the mirror's detailed design drawing. It was now conceived as an illuminated hall mirror and board for keys and such.

Time flies, time elapses

In 1990 I met Frank Hoppe, an enthusiast and boffin who produced small precise unique items. We were of like-minded as to how things should be done and wanted to work together.

This fascinating small mirror was the object of our excitement. We started working on it and called ourselves "passt!"

A prototype emerged. Later we had a set of three mirrors.

The first was illuminated with a shelf. The second being able to be turned 360 degrees and the third with just the small bowl.

Several of these "sets" were featured in "der heisse Stuhl" (The Hot Seat), an MME-Video production.
